Hamlets - Osmondcroft
A farm to the South of the Barnard castle Road (A67), it is recorded in the thirteenth century and was owned by the Priors of Durham and the Bowes family. It has seen much mining and quarrying activity mainly for coal and as recently as the 1980s shafts were sunk but no coal extracted. In the nineteenth century and later the Osmondcroft Brick and Tile Company functioned using coal from a nearby pit. Today all is quiet and the land expertly managed.
