Hamlets - Westholme Hall
Westholme Hall is one of the oldest mansions in the Parish, originally probably a Viking settlement called Wrecksholme. In the sixteenth century it was part of the Raby Estate with the Dowthwaite family as tenants. In 1603 they had amassed enough money to buy the estate and in 1606 rebuilt much of the Hall. In the nineteenth century it became very dilapidated until in 1892 it was bought by Joseph Thompson of a Sunderland shipbuilding family who restored the property and it remains in the hands of his descendants today.
